Description:
Included here are two wonderful, large floral paintings from the
Henry Francis du Pont collection at Winterthur, attributed to the Circle of
Jacob de Wit (1695-1754), the important eighteenth century Amsterdam School painter. Each depicts ceramic putty supporting flower baskets. Each canvas measures 52" by 46.5" (132 cm by 118 cm) and the modern frames measure approximately 66.5" by 52.5". The pair were purchased by our client for $41,400 on October 14, 1994 in lot 28 at the Christie's New York auction of Old Master & American Paintings from the private residence of Henry Francis du Pont at Winterthur. Each is in excellent condition and reside in matching white-painted frames with gilded organic and ribbon decoration. Color of each canvas and frame are identical, and variations seen in our photos are due to different lighting conditions during photography. Available for inspection by appointment in Greenwich CT.
Additional images forwarded upon request.
Jacob de Wit was a leading Dutch decorative painter of his day, active primarily in Amsterdam. He studied in Antwerp and was influenced by Rubens' ceiling paintings in the Jesuit Church there. A Catholic, he was the first Dutch painter since the sixteenth century to complete a substantial body of work for Catholic churches. He's known for his delicate and charming Rococo style on ceiling decorations, canvases, and trompe-l'oeil style paintings of marble reliefs which are widely referred to as "Witjes".
Works by de Wit, his circle and followers are held by numerous institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Fine Arts Museums of San Franciso, San Diego Museum of Art, Le Musée Ingres in Montauban France, Museum Bredius in The Hague, among others.
