PER TERRAS.

London, 1974, p. 622. According to Howard, the cadet branch of
the MacDonalds, Lords of the Isles dates from the 15th century.
James MacDonald of Ranathan was born in 1702. In 1731, he
married Helen, the daughter and heir of Ludovick Grant of
Tullach, and died in 1776. This service was probably made for
their son William, born in 1732, of Ranathan and St. Martin’s
Abbey in Perthshire. Another service with the same arms and
motto, but a different crest, was made about ten years later for
the MacAllister family.
