Description:
A Country House in a ParkEnglish School, circa 1840Oil on millboard, size 9 x 12In its original frameThis charming view of a family by their house, from the costumes and style of painting, dates from the beginning of Queen Victoriaâe(tm)s reign. It was common amongst the gentry to employ artists, often well recognised to tutor their children in drawing and painting and this type of work is typical of what was produced. This is a finely detailed work, executed with much care and is of professional standard. This unknown house appears to be a 17th century building with a late Georgian two floored bay added. The spruce in the centre of the picture suggests it may be Scotland. The picture comes from a large collection formed by an Antique dealer in Norfolk, which was sold in February 2004. This picture is painted on millboard, a substitute for wooden panel invented during the Napoleonic Wars when the Royal Navy sequestered all the oak in Britain. It was retailed by Thomas Brown, a very famous firm of artist suppliers which existed between 1805 and 1854.
