Description:
We have always been drawn to the simplicity of Art Deco advertising and this piece reminds us why -a black and white drawing which is so very similar to the style of Paul Iribe (another artist who was very popular and who produced lasting advertising during the Art Deco period), but which is credited to Marcel Jacques Hemjic. Research was not particularly helpful about Hemjic - we know he was born after 1894, that he produced (under the name Hemjic - his real name was evidently Marcel Jacques) some lasting images of fashion (posters for PKZ among others), as well as advertisements like this one. Ovingtons - which was located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 39th Street was a department store in the same vein as Tiffany - they had china made to order (samples of which can still be found on E-bay!), as well as magnificent ads like this one. Measuring 20 x 11 and framed, this piece has slight tears in the text area - which do not affect image- but is otherwise in lovely shape.
