Description: This original drawing of the fin-de-siecle French cabaret Moulin Rouge by Red Grooms is marker on tracing paper and measures 26-1/2 x 39 inches, sight size, and 37 x 49 inches in archival blond wood frame. Built in 1889 in the red light district of Pigalle in Paris, the Moulin Royuge was the spiritual birthplace of the can-can. it was the subject of paintings by the post-impressionist painter Toulouse-Lautrec, who is pictured at the bottom left of the drawing. Red Grooms enjoys incorporating famous artists in his work and "Moulin Rouge" is no exception. The drawing is signed and dated 1992 upper right. The international contemporary superstar Red Grooms was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1937, but has lived in New York City since 1957. He is best known for his 3-dimensional multi-media, full-scale, walk-through tableaux called “sculpto-pictoramas.” He also employs lithography, watercolor, pen and pencil, and smaller-scale sculpture to create totally original art that appeals to a broad range of people. Loaded with humor and empathy, Grooms’ work reflects his fascination with popular culture, urban life, architecture, foreign lands, and historical figures. Be it a life-size New York bus sagging under all its diverse riders or a band of serenading Mexican mariachis, Grooms’ work literally overflows with energy, all the while stressing the common humanity that binds us. Grooms recently celebrated 36 figures from Tennessee history with the exuberant, life-size Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel created for his hometown Nashville’s Riverfront Park---his largest sculpture yet.
