Description:
This is a very nice old set in excellent condition and is all complete. The case measures 14 3/4" in length and I'm pretty certain that the balance pendulum is ivory...this is 10.5" long.It is very yellow from age but I cannot see the course grain marks that indicate bone. The case is shaped like a Maori Mere or Club...the brass pan and counter balance look original but the thread would of course be newer. The brass clip at top slides to hold or open the two halves. The brass studs on either end are engraved and I think represent a Lotus Blossom. Many Chinese came to New Zealand in the late 1800's to work the goldfields in Central Otago and Coromandel so we do find similar items from time to time. One set of these scales is listed in the 2009 MILLERS ANTIQUES GUIDE ...it does have a a set of weights also included with it but the set is PRICED AT Pounds Sterling, and classified as 'HUANGHUALI' - 17th -18th CENTURY.The Chinese term huanghuali literally means "yellow flowering pear" wood. It is a member of the rosewood family. In pre-modern times the wood was known as huali or hualu. The modifier huang(yellowish-brown) was added in the early twentieth century to describe old huali wood whose surfaces had mellowed to a yellowish tone due to long exposure to light.
