Description:
This is an incredible painting by New York City Abstract Expressionist Albert Kotin. Kotin utilized vived hues of blue, red, and orange to create the dynamic expressionistic effect in this stunning work of art. Kotin, born in Russia in 1907, is a very well listed NYC artist active throughout the expressionist period who painted alongside of such artist as de Kooning. His work is currently being featured in the national traveling exhibition "Suitcase Paintings: Small Scale Abstract Expressionism".
Albert Kotin belonged to the early generation of New York School Abstract Expressionist Artists whose artistic innovation by the 1950s had been recognized across the Atlantic including Paris. New York School Abstract Expressionism represented by Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, Franz Kline and others became the leading art movement of the postwar area.
Artists including James Brooks, Nicolas Carone, Giorgio Cavallon, Willem & Elaine De Kooning, Enrico Donati, John Ferren, Perle Fine, Michael Goldberg, Robert Goodnough, Grace Hartigan, Hans Hofmann, Earl Kerkam, Franz Kline, Albert Kotin, Conrad Marca-Relli, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Richard Pousette-Dart, Milton Resnick, James Rosati, Louis Schanker, David Smith, and Esteban Vicente were the 24 artists from the total of 256 participants who were included in the famous 9th St. Show, (1951) and in all the following New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals from 1953 to 1957. These Annuals were important because the participants were chosen by the artists themselves. Kotin died in 1980.
Alexander Calder wrote in 1968: As long as there are people such as Al Kotin, there is no danger to art.
He studied at the Art Students League of New York, The National Academy of Design, the National Institute for Architectural Education, and with Charles Hawthorne. His work has been exhibited at the Association of American Artists, Witchita Art Museum, Hacker Gallery, March Gallery, Tanager Gallery, all of the annual Stable Gallery exhibits, the 9th Street Show, Grand Central Moderns, Allyn Gallery, University of Southern Illinois, Milli-Jay Gallery, Pollock Gallery, Galerie Iris Clert, Graham Gallery, MModA Traveling, Byron Gallery, Brooklyn Center, City College of New York, and the Brooklyn Potytechnic Institute.
