Bernard Buffet achieved worldwide renown and is considered one of France's most important painters of the twentieth century. According to The Collector's Guild LTD, “…Bernard Buffet is a legend in his own time. His famous linear style makes his works the most recognizable in the world. No collection of modern art is complete without its Buffet". Buffet was born in France in 1928 and attained recognition as an artist at an early age. He developed a distinctive style and studied art at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts. By the age of twenty, he had his first one-man show and received the Prix d la Critique. His works seem to express the existential alienation and spiritual solitude of the post-war generation; characterized by elongated, spiky forms, sharp linear styles, with dark outlines, somber colors and an almost monochromatic palette, which creates an overall mood of loneliness and despair. His subjects include religious, landscape, still life and portrait works. Buffet enjoyed enormous success in the 1950's. In 1955, he received first prize in a referendum conducted by the Review, "Connaissance des Arts", and was designated first out of ten best painters of the post world war era. In 1973, the Musée Bernard Buffet was opened in Surugdaira, Japan. Suffering from Parkinson's disease, and no longer able to work as he wished, Bernard Buffet committed suicide in 1999.
