Description:
YOU WILL SEARCH LONG AND HARD TO FIND A NORTHEAST WOODLAND INDIAN BASKET LIKE THIS. THIS IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, NO BROKEN CURLICUES, NO BREAKES IN THE WEAVE. Made by the Maine Penobscot, Passamaquoddy Indians, or the or Algonquin Indians. I lean toward the Algonquin Indians on this one. The Northeastern Indians lived East of The Plains Indians, and reached from from Maryland to The Greats Lakes and then up into Maine. It is very hard to tell for sure as all these tribes made very similar baskets. This basket is in excellent condition (except for the fact that it has faded on the outside where it is vegetable dyed. It is a beautiful mellow color, no breaks or separation in the curlicues or splint weave. THERE ARE (4) PLACES THAT ARE SPLIT ON THE CURLICUES BUT THEY ARE VERY TIGHT YET (not breaks or ANY missing PIECES). IT IS JUST FROM DRYING OUT AND SLIGHT SHRINKAGE AFTER IT WAS MADE. . There is a little dust in it! It could stand a light vacuuming. No I am ot the perfect housekeeper. It has been kept in a glass topped cupboard. The top of the basket is decorated in (27) curlicues with what was originally red & yellow banding (still vivid on the inside). It has a ash hand carved swing handle that is wooden pinned. This is an exceptionally deep & large gathering basket compared to most. It measures: 9 1/2" high with X 12" without the hanndle, and finally the base is 12" X 12". I purchased this basket in Maine in the 1970's. I have collected Indian baskets for 30 years and I ASSURE YOU THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST AND IN GREAT CONDITION. I am selling part of my collection in antisipation to retiring and moving to a much smaller home. With this basket will go a little piece of my heart. If you are a collector you know what I mean. If you would like to read about Collecting Indian Baskets I recommend: Indian Baskets by Sarah Peabody Turnbaugh and William A. Turnbaugh published in 1986. It has Native American Indian Basket weavers and their baskets. An in depth analysis of the materials, construction, shapes and designs.
