Description:
This is a nice clean, vintage 2 speed hand crank breast drill marked "YANKEE NO. 1555 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA PA. U.S.A.", and patent dates from 1897 to 1911 marked just below the name. It measures about 16.5" long overall, with a 3 jaw drill chuck, with up to 1/2 diameter shank drills, with spring loaded retract jaws, very heavy duty with a place to use a wrench to tighten or loosen standard shank drills. This one has about 30% of the black paint intact, and the handles are in good solid condition, with a rosewood finish on the side handle (appears newer), both in working order, the side handle is threaded and removeable. The breast plate on this one is adjustable, to 90 degrees from what is shown. This model drill, has several crank selections, and ratcheting options (including lock) as well, controlled via the switch type selector, in good working order (the two speeds are control with a switch on the crank handle) works fine. All the gears are in good+ condition, except one is partially missing, but is not a problem since this unit drives by means of two gears for both high and low speeds, and the other gear in this case that will engage at the same time as the chipped gear is in good shape. All gears engage nicely, turn smoothly (provided it is oiled in the several required oil holes, one drop of oil per hole is usually enough before use). The chuck has been cleaned and oiled and is in great shape overall, and is also marked "YANKEE" on it, turns true to center, and works just fine. Overall a clean, nice looking heavy duty hand drill, with nice features, complete with all the hardware. Also features adjustable shaft ball bearings just behind the chuck. A very well made, nice looking tool, by a well known maker! A very nice, no rust, clean, top of the line breast drill!
