Description: This is a great item for the Breweriana collector and the Norman Rockwell collector. This is a metal plate showing the First Breweriana series ever designed by America's Best-loved artist-illustrator. This plate is 10" in diameter and was made by Benedictine Genuine Toleware of Caledonia, Michigan in 1984. A little history of the Heilman Brewing Company that made Schmidt's Beer. Born in Wurttemberg, Germany in 1824 hand move to the US residing first in Philadelphia, and then in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he operated a bakery for several years. Gottlieb Heileman then moved to La Crosse and became involved in the brewing industry. Under his guidance the “City Brewery” grew and was quite successful. On February 19, 1878, Mr. Heileman died and his wife Johanna became one of the first woman presidents of a corporation in the state of Wisconsin. She continued in that capacity until her death in 1917. With the enactment of the Eighteenth Amendment, "National Prohibition" the company directed its attention to the production of near beer (nonalcoholic beer) and soda pop. When beer was again legalized after the passage of the Twenty-first Amendment (1933), the brewery spent much money to rehabilitate and refit the long-inactive brewing facilities. Consequently, a Chicago-based investment company, Paul U. Davis & Company, became heavily involved in the affairs of the brewery. This continued until control was returned to the stockholders by Roy E. Kumm, who was elected president in 1956. As the company continued to grow and production became greater every year, more money was allocated for advertising. At one point Norman Rockwell was commissioned to do a painting for Schmidt’s City Club Beer, which is one of the many products produced by the House of Heileman. This beer was one of the top sellers in the state of Minnesota and with the publication of Mr. Rockwell’s picture it received national acclaim.
