Doll: Early (1920s?) cloth sailor (velvet/ cotton/ felt?) & hard
moulded painted face
(papermache?); NO TAG but identifiable as a classic NW doll.
Maker: Norah Wellings - British; soft toy making firm operated
circa 1926-early 1960s.
Details: Closed grinning painted rosy dimpled puckered mouth
(no teeth showing);
rounded cheeks; painted side-glancing blue eyes; painted
eyelashes & slightly arched
hairline eyebrows; ears protruding; white stitched cloth feet &
hands (humb & fingers
stitched apart; toes formed by stitching). Costume of navy velvet
(?) (w/ bell-bottom
shaped legs) is stitched to body; blue & white striped undershirt
peeks through "V" necked
uniform's blue & white striped collar; knotted white cord hangs
loose around doll's neck;
off white sailor-like cap has dark navy/black colored band.
Condition: Hard formed face has spots where paint is rubbed;
body / clothing / cap need
professional cleaning; loose collar thread; no holes, tears,
repairs, stains.
