Description:
This is a very rare Niggerhair tobacco pail from the B. Leidersdorf Company of Milwaukee, Wis. The American Tobacco Co. Successor, Inc. The pail is in very good condition with a superb lithograph on one side that has only one very tiny scratch in the E of niggerhair. The lithograph on the other side is equal in quality but has a minor scratch at the base and the start of some rust that is just starting to bubble the paint at the base in the word tobacco. (see pictures) The pail has the original bail handle and raw tin lid. The lid has started to tarnish and has the start of some surface rust in spots, especially where the paper tobacco seal was applied across the top of the lid. The remnants of the original green paper Federal Tobacco Seal that was affixed at the factory is still present on the sides of the pail. The original rusty orange color is uniform and even thoughout the surface area of the tin. The American Tobacco Co. changed the name of this product to "Bigger Hair" tobacco in the early 1940's when the previous name became less socially acceptable. At that time, the material of the container was changed from tin to a heavy cardboard. The pail or tin is 6 3/4 inches tall and with the bail handle totals 9 3/4 inches in height. It is 5 3/4 inches in diameter. The inside of the pail has the original silver finish but does have areas that are tarnished and where some surface rust has started to form but there are no holes in the tin. This is an extraordinarily rare piece of black memboabilia seldom found in this very good condition complete with the lid and bail handle.
