One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** Nelson and Puck. Dogs of Other Days. Jones Nº 106. “A scarce little book. The authoress was the daughter of Sir J. Y. Simpson, the eminent physician and a pioneer anaesthetist. His portrait is given in the frontispiece with a Miniature Toy Terrier on his shoulder. The vignette on the title page is of a Deerhound. The stories are charmingly told of the various dogs in the Simpson’s household, a Newfoundland, Manchester Terrier, Deerhound, Miniature Black and Tan Toy Terrier, Pug Dog, Mastiff”. – Gerald Massey, A Show Catalogue of Dog Books, Paintings & Prints, 1945. Boards rubbed. Tips and spine lightly rubbed, and there is a small loss of leather at extreme spine head. Mr. Fretwell's bookplate on front flyleaf. Front hinge weak. Nice interior. VG.
