Description:
We are very pleased to present this stunning Native American Indian child's ceremonial dress. I am not an expert in this field, but will relay the information as well as I can, and will stand corrected if I am wrong. It is made of incredibly soft leather, and measures 25" in total length. The width from sleeve-tip to sleeve-tip is 27". I would say it the equivalent of a current size 3, except that it is very slim, measuring just over 9" across the chest. The sleeves and bottom trim are blue dyed leather, which shows some mottling in tone. Hanging from the line of the sleeve top beading are American Indian head pennies, which are hung by leather thongs, along with three brass? beads. The earliest of these pennies dates to 1880, and the latest to 1907. The dress is in remarkably good condition, and we believe it must have been carefully packed away. On the front, there are some marks, which can be seen in the first photo. In fact, the one on the upper right looks almost like an animal paw print. I don't know what these marks are, but they are not dirt. It's almost like an indention, making a shadow--hard to describe. On the back, above the blue hem band, there is a round hole that looks to have been done by an ember. This would support the former owner's assertion that this dress was used for a ceremony of some kind, such as the Ghost Dance. The beadwork is very fine, and the white beads have a look of being yellowed by age. It hangs from a hanger which is an actual branch covered with leather, and hung by another leather thong. The branch has snapped on the left side, but the leather is still holding it together. The dealer who owns it acquired it at an estate sale several years ago. When she bought it, she was told that it came from the west, and was only worn once at a Ghost Dance. She had an online appraisal done on it, and the appraiser concurred that it was from one of the Great Plains tribes, such as the Cheyenne or Souix, and was used for a ceremony. This appraiser did not believe the dress to be any more than 50 years old because of its exceptionally good condition, and that there is no fringe missing. Again, I am not an expert, but I respectfully question this assertion. I believe it could very well be so fine because of careful storage, and I think the age of the pennies is too significant to dismiss. Also, the yellowing of the white beads should be taken into consideration too. Whatever is true, there is no doubt that for one exciting night a tiny little Indian maiden with raven braids, and melting brown eyes felt like a little princess dancing in her beautiful dress. We will gladly provide more detailed photos, and consider serious offers.
