Description:
This is an exquisite example of a Yakima Indian beaded bag from the 1920's. It has sinew sewn pearlized glass seed beads as the backround and cut jet glass beads and orange seed beads as the border. All are lane stitched. The center of the bag has three flowers and numerous leaves. The flowers are red iridescent with yellow trim and white accents. The leaves are two tones of green, one is iridescent that is the trim and veins. The centers are green opaque seed beads. The work onthe bag is pristine, there are no missed or misplaced beads. It show workmanship of the highest quality. The interior of the bag is cream satin and the back is blue cordoury. There are some soil places on the pearlized bottom but very slight. The buckskin handles may have been replaced. This bag is one of six from a private New York collector. Examples of similar pieces from this estate can be found in Christie's catalogue New York American Indian Art sale of January 05 and in American Indian Art June 03. The collection I am selling has been thirty years in one collection.
This is American Folk art at it's most compelling.
