Description:
Exceptional Tortoiseshell & Mother of Pearl Card Case. The mother-of-pearl insert is actually made up of several diamond shaped panels that are individually carved with either fern or a "seaweed" pattern. (Perhaps it is a jigsaw piece?), Both sides of the card case carry the identical intricately detailed patterns. The hinged lid at the top 1/8th of the case opens at the push of the silver button and is strung with ivory. The red velvet interior is a bit faded and worn, but in overall great condition, considering that it is original to the piece. In the elegant days of centuries past, when ladies went calling, if the host and hostess were not in, a calling card would be left with the butler. Elegant, two- toned cases like this one, especially with the intricate inlay, were very highly prized.
