Description: AN INLAID MOTHER-OF-PEARL, IVORY AND CARVED WOOD MUSEUM-QUALITY FLOOR SCREEN

An exquisite and extremely rare museum-quality two-panel standing floor screen, the central field of each panel depicting flying cranes and willow tree branches, delicately carved with ivory and mother-of-pearl inlaid into what appears to be a mahogany ground. The crane is symbolic of longevity in Asian art, and endowed with many mythical attributes. It is reputed to be the patriarch of the feathered tribe. The willow tree is the Buddhist symbol of humility or meekness. It is regarded as a sign of spring, and has provided the poets and artists throughout Asian history with themes reflecting on its beauty, suppleness, and frailty, often becoming the emblem of the fair sex. The tree is believed, also, to possess power over demons, and can expel them as occasion demands. Each of the two panels is completely surrounded and framed by spectacular full-relief wood borders which represent the three realms of existence in this world; the top with scenes of sky and birds, gradually transforming along the sides to cherry trees with blossoms, finally becoming seascape scenes at the bottom, with waves and crabs, overall an exquisitely crafted wood sculpture.

This is one of the rarest and most magnificent screens we have ever seen. The inlay, as well as the wood carving, are of the highest quality. The artist's carved signature plaque and seal appear at the lower left of the left panel. The overall condition is excellent, except for some minor losses to the inlay. The screen is 78" in height, and each panel is 38" in width. All of our pieces are guaranteed unconditionally to be authentic as described. Additional photos are available.
