Description:
Signed on the mount, recto; photographer’s copyright, address and limitation stamp, verso. Illustrated in Room and Time Enough, by Mary Austin, 1979 pl. no. 41. After briefly considering a career in journalism, Morley Baer (1916 –1995) began his artistic career as a landscape and architectural photographer. Upon seeing an Edward Weston exhibition in Chicago, Baer was so taken by the work’s emotional impact that he moved to California and offered himself as an assistant to Weston. They became friends and Baer mentored with Weston while falling under the spell of the California landscape. Weston’s influence on Baer is evident in this photograph, as Garrapata Beach was also a favorite photographic subject of Weston’s. Baer represents a generation of photographers whose aesthetic interest in the landscape was inseparable from their love of the land itself. (source: Photography West Gallery).
