Description:

Introduction:

To our fellow collectors in this country and abroad, greetings and good wishes! This is the fifth fully catalogued auction of perfume bottles to be held in the United States, and this auction serves to support the International Perfume Bottle Association in that a portion of the proceeds of the auction will be donated to that organization.

The 1995 Monsen and Baer Perfume Bottle Auction Catalogue resembles no other catalogue in the auction field that we are aware of. It requires a year's work to produce it. Our catalogue began as a listing of lots for the auction, but it has developed into something that is much more than that. The photographs and descriptions of lots serve the obvious and primary function of information for the auction sale, but beyond that, they also have an archival function that collectors in the United States and abroad are coming to value highly. The goal here goes beyond merely selling perfume bottles, though of course we wish to do that and to do it well. Our overall goal is to provide the collector with a resource of documentation that can be used over and over again. In a very real sense, we wanted to produce for collectors something that we, as collectors ourselves, would value and find useful. Our sincere wish is that other collectors use it, learn from it, and enjoy it.

The article section further expands the documentation goal of the catalogue. To aid in the expansion and diffusion of knowledge about perfume bottles, we have again prevailed upon fellow collectors and dealers to share their invaluable knowledge on a variety of subjects. This year, we wanted to include something in this catalogue to honor Gildas Conan, a collector whom we all admired greatly, and we could think of no more fitting and sincere way to do this than to carry forth the research he had begun. It was in this way that we embarked upon the project of the Guerlain Hommage, a joint undertaking that many of Gildas' friends participated in. Our only wish is that we could have had many more pages to devote to it.

As we did last year, we also include translations of these articles in French and German. We are indebted to Peter Dechent, Thomas Cory, Christiane Angeli, and Thomas Higgonet for this work. The article section allows authors to discuss a specific topic in great detail, and allows each author to reach a wide audience, in the USA and abroad. The abundance of color photographs is an important addition to this section, and it is produced at enormous financial expense. We produce this section as a service to this wonderful hobby: Knowledge-and the sharing of it-enhances our pleasure in collecting.
