Description:
9 toned gelatin silver prints ( 1 is albumen,)sizes 2 5/8" x 4 1/8" to 5" x 7 1/4". Henry Bosse is known for a celebrated album of beautiful large cyanotype photographs of the upper Mississippi. The album was broken up and individual plates sold to private collectors and museums, some for more than $10,000 each. These photographs were found, along with the album, in a house once inhabited by Alexander Mackenzie, the engineer who supervise Bosse's photographic survey. These were his personal views. A presentation album of gelatin silver photographs by Bosse is owned by the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers. This is the only other known group of these images. One of these photographs shows the "Lucia" pulled up to shore, with a larger steamer behind her. That one is the "Vixen," later renamed the "Henry Bosse." The most unusual and important photographs are the 4 that show the interior of the "Floating Palace," the magnificent barge on which Mackenzie lived in high style while supervising the work, and where Bosse was a frequent visitor. This includes his bedroom, his office with his surveying tripod at left, the bathroom, and a light view of the kitchen with a cook at work. There are also various views of working boats, including the snag boat "General Barnard." The prints are clean with no damage, though a few are light.
