Pair of plates handpainted and signed by L Malpass at the Paul Blot Studio, Paris, made by Mintons, England and depicting a Japanese peasant woman with a large fish and a Japanese Samurai Warrior.. 9inches diameter. 1.Exquisitely handpainted Japanese gentleman. Unusual angle - seen turning around from a back view as though caught in a candid shot. Traditional Japanese silk costume and sword of the aristocratic Samurai. 2.Handpainted Japanese peasant woman holding a large fish, probably a carp in a simple, open basket on a bed of longbladed grass. Seen from a back view , her head slightly turned. Traditional Japanese peasant costume, a folded umbrella in one hand. The figures, painted in rich colours in contrast to the water colour effect of the landscape and water background. Gold rim around border and another gold rim on the rim underneath the plate. Artist signature on front of both plates L Malpass. The back of the plate is signed in red script: 3550 (and 3110) Paul Blot Paris 3 Rue de la Paix and has a number of impressed marks, including the Minton factory mark on the back of the woman. Condition is MINT. No chips/cracks/damage of any sort. The gentleman plate does have crazing, typical of English porcelain of this age. A series of these paintings is shown in 'Handpainted porcelain plates' by Richard Rendall and Elise Abrams, page 60, with a value of $1200 - $1400.- per plate.
