Description:
I am selling 2 original regimental (Reservisten) beer steins c.1895 - 1897 that belonged to the same person - reservist Aug. Stockfisch. This is quite unusual - I have never seen this before. Apparently each stein was ordered in different years of serving. Reservist Stockfisch served in Moerchingen in 5 Battr. Feld-Artillery Regt No. 34 in 1895 - 1897. This sale is for stein #2. Made of porcelain with lithophane in the bottom showing two girls readin a letter - apparently from a soldier. This type of body was popular in 1880s - 1890s and disappeared in 1900s. Hand-painted over transfer outline are artillery scenes. The lid is pewter with artillery gun for a finial and eagle thumblift. The bottom of the stein has a hole. It was a custom in Germany to make a hole in a regimental or occupational beer stein when the original owner died. It was intended to prevent anywone from drinking from a very personal vessel that was so dear to the owner. Not everyone followed this custom, but we see a lot of regimental and occupational steins with this holes. Out of 2 regimental steins belonged to this person only one was holed - this one was probably the one most personal to the owner. I guarantee my dating and authencity! Excellent condition otherwise with no chips, sracks or repairs. 9" tall 0.5L capacity.
