The lure of patch collecting is more than the mere accumulation of pieces of cloth. That can be done by anyone with desire and money.
More important aspects of this fascinating hobby are the personal relationships that are created. Friends are made, communications are established and information is exchanged. A strong sense of history is engendered which adds to the complete enjoyment of the genre.
Through the years, I have tried to find some reference work that I could carry around to shows and in travels that would give me some kind of guidance in organizing and cataloging my collection as I went along. Although there have been many books on the market, most of them did not offer both portability and comprehension. With the publication of this work, I have tried to answer both requirements. I hope that you will agree and enjoy this effort.
The purpose of this book is strictly one of identification. I have tried to show as many different designs as possible in order to give the interested person, either a collector or someone just intrigued with the genre, a source of ideas on what unit that patch may represent. I have made no distinction between shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) or pocket patches - and I have left the whole argument of original or reproduction to those who revel in it.
I hope that this book will give the reader some direction in identifying or cataloging a collection. This hobby has given me many hours of enjoyment. My sincere wish is that it may do the same for you.
