We are pleased to offer these beautiful Sterling silver malachite and onyx inlay pierced post earrings.

These earrings weigh approximately 5.3 grams which is about 2.6 grams each, a comfortable weight for your earlobes. The earrings measure about 1 1/4” long by about 7/8” wide. There are two onyx stones inlaid on each side of the bands of malachite (See below) in the middle. The onyx stones (See below) measure about 12.26mm on the flat side by 9.20mm at the widest of the arc. The malachite stones, beautiful green banded stones, measure about 4.98mm wide by 12.26mm long. They are marked “925” indicating that they are made of Sterling silver (See below), “Mexico” indicating the country of their origin, and “TS-19” which is a Mexican laborer identification number. The Sterling silver of the setting has Southwestern design hammered grass tufts all around the stones. The earrings are in excellent condition with a few polishing marks that are barely visible, and they are quite pretty.

Onyx
Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx available contain bands of colors of white, tan, and brown. Sardonyx is a variant in which the colored bands are sard (shades of red) rather than black. Pure black onyx is common, and perhaps the most famous variety, but not as common as onyx with banded colors.

It is usually cut as a cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglios and cameos, where the bands make the image contrast with one another and usually appear as a white cameo on a black background.

Malachite
Malachite is a famous and very popular semi-precious stone. It is named for the Greek word for "mallow", a green herb. Its banded light and dark green designs are one-of-a-kind, and give it a unique ornamental quality unlike that of any other stone. The light and dark green bands are so distinctive that malachite maybe one of the most easily recognized minerals by the general public. It forms the banding from subtle changes in the oxidation states of the surrounding waters, but the exact mechanism is still not well understood. Tumbled stones of malachite are possibly the most popular tumbled stones ever and are sold in literally every rock shop around the world. Carvings and figurines of malachite are almost as common.

Malachite is also popular in jewelry, Native American Southwestern jewelry especially. The stones inlayed in silver make a nice variance from the traditional turquoise jewelry. Instead of competing, the two green stones tend to compliment each other when placed together in the same settings.

Sterling silver
Sterling silver is a white and highly reflective precious metal. Sterling refers to silver that is 92.5 percent pure, which should be stamped on the metal, sometimes accompanied by the initials of the designer or country of origin as a hallmark.
