Description: The latter half of the 19th Century was a time of furious invention in all areas of endeavor in this country, and in no field were there more innovations, refinements, and patents issued than in the field of tool design and manufacture. Many of the patents were for frivolous or useless refinements, but many more advanced the design, and provided real improvement in a tool’s performance.

Solon Rust, a Connecticut inventor, who held many innovative tool patents, was involved in the design of this plane, which bears four patent dates on its chip-breaker. The really rare, limited production, planes with innovative patents (such as this example) are few and far between on the sale and auction scene, as they have been snapped up by advanced tool collectors who have grown past their “Stanley phase.”

This plane measures 9.5 inches OAL, with a blade width of 2.125 inches. It has been lightly used, and both the handle and the knob are undamaged, and retain their original finish almost unblemished. The metal parts of this plane have not been cleaned (other than dusting) and the surfaces have darkened some with age. The only areas of minor rust pitting are on the back of the blade, and several spots on the sole. Please note: this pitting is not “craters of the moon” quality, but merely slight roughness and discoloration. As the photos show, there is 75% or so japanning remaining ahead of the throat, and very little aft of the throat - but no rust or pitting. This plane has not been left out in the chicken coop with the leaky roof. It is a 125-year-old rare tool that would not disgrace any collection.

In 2003, an 18-inch fore plane of this model (in excellent, almost showroom condition) came on the market, and sold quickly for $1,750 . This plane is a smaller size, in less than mint condition, and is priced to sell.

Please don’t hesitate to request additional information or more detailed pictures. Both are readily available. ALSO, please don’t fail to check the other items we are offering.
