Description: This is a very large Victorian Meissen hand painted portrait cabinet cup. Hand painted with a portrait of Marie Antoinette, a la rose - 1785 after French artist portrait painter Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842). The cup is circa 1870. The scroll footed cup has raised rococo revival gold gilt decoration all over the cup and high handle. The inside of the cup is high polished gold gilt. This Marie Antoinette portrait cup is of course first quality,The cup is near perfect with only slight wear to the gilding. The entire painting is perfect with no scratches or wear. Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842) was a well-known and respected French artist who many consider to be the most famous woman portraitist of 18th century Europe. Her portraits are artistically accomplished, unique to the sitter and captivating. Her lifetime artistic output exceeded 900 paintings including multiple self portraits, 30 portraits of her friend Marie Antoinette (Fig. 1) and over 600 portraits of French, Russian, Italian and German royalty and other prominent figures. The latter individuals she befriended and painted after fleeing France at the start of the Revolution in 1789 (she was a Royalist). She traveled extensively and lived in the above countries until returning to France in 1809. During her exile she gained considerable recognition and was a member of the Academies of Florence, Rome, Bologna, St Petersburg and Berlin in addition to being a member of the French Saint-Luc's Academy since 1774.
