Here at Goodoletoms we believe this piece is made from Mastodon ivory. This piece comes with a fine sterling silver rope chain from Italy and a lobster claw clasp. It is in excellent condition.
Mastodons were a prehistoric elephant that lived between 20,000 and 1,000,000 years ago. Mastodon ivory is "fossil ivory" from the mastodon's tusk. The mastodon ivory used for jewelry is what is called "fossil ivory". It is from extinct animals which died out about 30,000 years ago. No animals were harmed in order to obtain this material. Although the term "fossil ivory" implies the material has been "fossilized", or turned to stone, fossil ivory has actually been frozen instead of fossilized and, other than the coloring (due to materialization) and breakage (due to glacier action), it is still like the original bone material it was 30,000 years ago.
