Description: Mark wrote his Gospel from St Peter's oral story and under his guidance. He appears to have been witness only to the last days of Jesus. His Gospel alone mentions a certain young man who followed the Saviour after He was taken in Gethsemane, traditionally assumed to be Mark himself, author of the second Gospel. The Book of Acts mentions his mother Mary among the most devoted Christians. Mark was with St. Paul on his first journey and in Rome, and later accompanied St. Peter on his wanderings. According to tradition, Peter appointed him the first bishop of Alexandria, where he later died a martyr's death. St. Mark is commemorated on January 4 (17), April 25 ( May 8 ), September 27 (October10) and October 30 (November 12).
