Description:
This is a very rare mercury gold ormolu on bronze seal medal made following the birth of Marie Antoinette's fist born Madame Royale in 1778. This Royal medal is extremely rare and and very hard to find today and were made for the Queen to give out as gifts to close friends. This medal would have originally have been mounted in a elaborate frame like the one owned by Marie Antoinette on page 39 of the book "The Private Realm of Marie Antoinette" by Marie-France Boyer. The inscription on the medal is "Marie Antoinette D' Autriche Reine de France 1774". Signed Lorthior under the seat of Marie Antoinette. The seal depicts the queen seated on her throne receiving the coat of arms of France & Austria from the winged allegorical figure & cupid. 5,3 inches Pierre Joseph Lorthior, sculptor and medallist, was born at Lille in 1733, became Engraver to the King of France in 1776 and died in Paris in 1813. According to Forrar, Lorthior was author of a number of medals and jetons, also producing medallions and plaquettes "of elegant design and fine execution". He was "especially clever as an Engraver of seals and gaming counters, and produced some good work in gems". He is know to have engraved seals and signets for Marie Antoinette, madame la Dauphine, the duc d'Orleans and the comte d'Artois as well as for various other private individuals.
