Marianne Brandt working with Hin Bredenieck, in 1927 created the definitive form for small adjustable bedside and desk lights, with bell-shaped lacquered steel shades (intended to give a directional focused and evenly distributed source of light), gently curved necks and wedge-shaped feet from which the cord disappears neatly out of at the rear. Dark green. Oblique shade. Marks: Kandem Logo. Approx. 15.75" ht. Literature: Bauhaus Lighting Kandemlight, Klaus Weber, Olaf Thormann, et al, 2002, pg.143. Marianne BRANDT (1893-1983) Brandt studied painting and sculpture at the Grand Ducal College of Fine Arts in Weimar. She returned to Weimar in 1924 to enroll at the Bauhaus, where she entered the metal workshop, under the newly appointed head holy-Nagy. Moholy-Nagy assisted by the silversmith Christian Dell, took over as the metal workshop's Form Master from Johannes Itten in 1923. In 1928 Brandt became temporary head of the metal workshop. In 1929 she left the Bauhaus to work in Walter Gropius's architectural office in Berlin (1928-29) before being appointed as a designer for the Ruppelwerk GmbH, a metalware manufacturer in Gotha (1929-1932). In 1932 she returned to Chemnitz and worked independently, returning also to painting. In 1949-1951 she taught at the Dresden College of Free and Applied Arts as well as the Institut Fur Anfgewandte Kunst in Berlin (1951-1954). In her later years, she returned to painting and sculptures. Kandem In the late 1920s the pioneering firm of Kandem (Kurting Mathiesen AG, Leipzig) led the field in creating innovative lighting. Widespread in both private and public buildings, Kandem lighting fixtures also shaped nocturnal cityscapes throughout Europe. Drawing on intensive research and development, Kandem set the standards for modern lighting. As a school of art and design, the Bauhaus in Dessau was famous far beyond the borders of Germany. From the productive Bauhaus collaboration with Kandem emerged numerous types of lighting fixtures which were functional in design, form and construction. This pioneering achievement broke new ground in product development and design at a time when unlike the present collaboration between designers and industrialists was the exception. The results of their joint efforts were shown at important trade fairs such as the 1929 Werkbund exhibition Wohnung und Bauen House and Building in Breslau and the Exposition des Artistes Docorateurs Franaise in Paris in 1930. Today the lighting fixtures developed then are admired as outstanding historic examples of product design. Sought after by collectors and connaisseurs, they are represented at auctions and numerous museums.
