Description: This amazing chryselephantine bronze figurine by Marcel Andre Bouraine (1886-1948) depicts a lovely Egyptian female. Cast signature reads "A Bouraine" with the issue number "16" beneath. It measures 21.5" high, 12" wide and 8.75" deep and weighs an estimated 18-22 lbs. This Art Deco period work by Bouraine is exceptional for the use of gemstones in the figure's necklace, belt and sandals, and is one of the finest works by the artist to come to market in recent years. Bouraine was born in Pontoise (Seine-et Oise) and studied under Jean-Alexndre-Joseph Falguiere (1881-1900), who was known for reintroducing realism in nineteenth-century sculpture. Bouraine was captured in Germany during the WWI and was interned in Switzerland. In 1922 he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and in the following year he exhibited at the Salon d' Autommne. He created small scale sculptures for several French companies, including Susse Freer, La Verrier, and Arthur Goldscheider. In 1928 Gabriell Argy-Rousseau (1885-1953) commissioned a number of figurines from Bouraine. He executed two major commissions for the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. This item resides in our client's gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York, and may be seen by appointment. ( hantiques )
