Description:
This reproduction was electronically captured directly from an original copy without photographic intervention. It is individually ink jet printed upon request using color fast, fade resistant ultrachrome inks on 100% rag archival paper. The original of this beautiful world map is considered to be one of the great examples from the golden age of Dutch cartography. Richly embellished with portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, Jodocus Hondius (Henricus' father), and Gerard Mercator. Representations of the four elements are shown: Fire by Apollo; Aeros, the goddess of Air; Mother Earth, surrounded by flora & fauna; and Water by a siren and sea monsters. Above the cusp of the hemispheres is a celestial globe. Below is an allegorical representation of the goddess Europa receiving tribute from Asia, America, and Africa. All these scenes are linked together with a rich garland of fruit. The map includes an early appearance of Australia's Northern Coastline. California is also shown as an island. German text, printed upside down, is on the verso. Second state of four, issued by Jan Jansson.
