Description:
Her Majesty's Army, 1890. The full title of this work includes "A Descriptive Account of the Various Regiments Now Comprising the Queen's Forces, From Their First Establishment to the Present Time." The text was written by Walter Richards, with the pictures done by G. Douglas Giles. G. D. Giles (1857-1885), was born in India. He became a well known painter of military scenes as well as both horse-racing and hunting canvasses. He joined the army as a young man, serving in the army in Afghanistan and Egypt before leaving with the rank of Major in 1884. He had always sketched during his service career and took up painting seriously on resigning his commission. He studied under Carolus Duran in Paris. Giles worked in London, Newmarket and Edinburgh, where he died in February 1941. His paintings include some of the major British Battles in Africa as well as these paintings of military uniforms. The antiques chromolithographs in this work are full color uniform plates, all shown in the Home Service uniform of red or blue jackets before the arrival of universal khaki.
