Description:
9.25"h x 7.75"w x 4.75"d ( 23 x 19.8 x 12 cm) In the manner of early 19th c Staffordshire or Continental tin-glazed lions this charming fellow dates from 1900 -1920. Amusing primitive! Definitely wacky! People eyes & people eyebrows as well as front teeth.... or shall we say "human"? The twisted column he is holding ends with a pierced lotus inspired affair designed to hold a candle or possibly incense since it is hollow all the way through. The colors are clear & brilliant. Totally hand-painted of course. A few nicks, some minor glaze rubbings but no chips or cracks. An old export paper label is still stuck to the bottom, see photo.
