Description:
An Exhibition Quality Mahogany Partners Desk, circa 1860. By Wright and Mansfield. Rectangular top with original leather inset, above five oak lined drawers on either side, all with original mercury-gilt hardware, the center drawers being stamped "WRIGHT & MANSFIELD 104 NEW BOND ST." Four carved and fluted baluster columns support the desk.
Provenance: Supplied to Prestwold Hall, home to the Packe family for 350 years. Sir Christopher Packe, sometime Lord Mayor of London and a resolute supporter of Cromwell and the Parliamentarian' cause, came into ownership of the Prestwold estate during the Commonwealth interregnum.
Note: Wright & Mansfield were a mid-nineteenth century firm who excelled in producing pieces mainly for exhibition and not for general circulation. A collection of Wright & Mansfield pieces are currently housed and on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
