Description:
This solid mahogany Chippendale chest of drawers is a wonderful example of custom centennial furniture making. The back of the chest and all the drawer bottoms are hand planed and all the drawers are hand dovetailed. The top has a finely carved rope design and acanthus leaves at each front corner. One of the corner leaves has a small chip out of the corner. Below is a boldly swept cornice. Notice the sophisticated drawer configuration of 3 small drawers over 2; over 3 larger ones and they are graduated in size. The mahogany graining and color is superb. Notice the solid cast and pierced brass Chippendale pulls. And key escutcheons. The drawers have a moulded edge and the bottom 3 have their working locks. There is a small chip on the bottom drawer on the top left side. Notice the reeded quarter columns on the front corners and the gadrooned carving along the base. Check out the prominently carved front claw feet with shell carvings on the knees and the massive ogee bracket feet on the back. Only upon careful close inspection, you will see 3 toes missing on the front feet. The delicately shaped and carved shell between the front feet is another indication of high design and formality. The finish appears original and is in great condition having a rich patina.
