Description:
What a magnificent complete oak library or office set consisting of a bookcase with a built in settee, an executive sized desk and an armchair. There is also a matching grandfather clock being sold separately. The bookcase comes apart in many pieces for ease in transporting. It measures 8' long by 82" tall. The outside depth of the side bookcases is 18" and the total depth in the center with settee is 31". All the carvings are deep, realistic and highly detailed. Notice the profusion of lion carvings throughout. There are 4 small faces along the top cornice, and larger lion faces along the base. The large reclining lions are exquisitely carved and pose as arm rests. One lion is roaring and the other is growling. There are urn carvings along the cornice, on the drawers and seat base. Check out the robust carvings of scrolling leaves and vines along the cornice and base as well. On either side of the 2 beveled glass doors are ionic capitals with fluting and highly carved bases. Notice the panels below each door with carved winged angels. Their heads are fully 3 dimensional. Each door has its original lock and a key with an attached original tassel. Inside each side door are 4 adjustable shelves measuring 12" deep. The center of the bookcase has a recessed shelving area with 2 adjustable shelves measuring 7" deep. Wait, there is more too the bookcase! Below the bottom center shelf is a recessed paneled locking compartment for additional, possible hidden storage. It also retains its original working lock. There are 2 separate cushions for seating comfort. The bookcase rests on large bun feet. In addition, there are 2 hand-dovetailed drawers with their original pulls and working locks. The bookcase is in excellent original condition. The second piece to the set is a large executive or partner's desk, which measures 72" long, 31.5" tall and 36" deep. The desk has a replaceable leather looking top, which has a small inconspicuous tear along the edge of one side. This desk can be used on either side and is designed to set out in a room for viewing on all 4 sides. The front of the desk has 3 hand-dovetailed drawers. The center drawer has 4 felt lined dividers. Above each side drawer is a pull out writing surface. Below the side drawers are 2 doors with working locks and an original key. Inside the one door are 3 sliding drawers and a single shelf in the other. The back of the desk has 2 doors, which open to reveal a single shelf inside each. Notice the deeply recessed panels on the ends of the desk and the identical carvings mentioned on the bookcase. The desk is in excellent original condition. There is also a large armchair measuring 43.75" tall, 25" wide and 26" deep. The top crest repeats the urn and scrolling carving found on the desk and bookcase. The fabric is in excellent condition and matches the settee cushions. The chair is tight and quite comfortable. Please note that this chair was not designed to fit into the kneehole of the desk. It is original to the set and can be used to sit up to the or as a side/office chair. The finish is original and in excellent condition.
