Description:
Probably meant to be a Black Madonna due to the dark wood (Mahogony) it is carved from, this is an exquisite example with a gorgeous shiny Patina on its upper half especially. It came from a private collector in France but is most likely carved in Germany as the style is very popular there (Madonna auf dem mondsichel) The Blessed Virgin Mary wearing a crown (Queen of the World) holds the Infant Jesus in her arms and is stamping on a snake representing her overcoming of original sin. The Baby Jesus holds an orb in his hand. It is carved with medieval type almond eyes and a baroque type head on the infant and flowing cope and gown. It is a very warm statue and imparts this where ever it is displayed.
Please see my other items for more religious statues and objects and also for Irish interest.
