Description: Fossilised resin from the sap of the New Zealand kauri tree - this is a lump of New Zealand amber. Gum-digging was a popular pastime in early New Zealand, and also a serious occupation for many new immigrants to the country. The gum was used for jewellery and other trinkets, or for meltdown for other uses. Ancient kauri trees fallen in swamps and fossilised produced this glowing honey coloured resin. This lump has surface crazing, but is a good clear specimen inside. Measures about 10 cm by 9 cm by 4.5 cm (just under 4 inches by 3.1/2 inches by 1.3/4 inches).

Condition: Very good, see description. Year: Late 19th to Early 20th Century
Country: New Zealand
