Description:
Lovely Rococo rosewood Victorian settee. The top is open
carved and has a floral and leaf carved crest on each side. The fancy open
work inside the frame is made of four lamination in rosewood. The arms and
legs have bold and intricate carvings. It has the original brass castors on
the front legs. A similar (not quite as good) piece is shown on page 116 of
"American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. Chairs
in the same pattern are shown on page 88 of the same book. Although the
authors say it is by an unknown maker we believe it was made by George
Henkels, Philadelphia. We had the entire frame strengthened and French
polished (retaining the original finish). We had it reupholstered in a
olive damask. A very fine quality settee - nice to have it documented in a
reference book!
