Description:
Known as a meuble d'appui or "support piece," it is likely that this compact, antique cabinet was designed as a base to support a small chest, cupboard or other item. It features classic elements of Louis XIII style as reinterpreted by French craftsmen in the 19th century, including the rectilinear panels made of solid walnut and the graceful torsades or spiral turnings crowned by fleurons or stylized blossoms in a rectangular setting. The piece has had significant repairs and likely dates from the early 19th century, but boasts a magnificent patina and rich, deep coloration.
Quette, Anne-Marie, Le Mobilier Français Louis XIII et Louis XIV (Editions Massin, Paris, 1996)
The cabinet works well in any number of rooms, including the foyer, living room, library, bedroom, dining room, or even the kitchen.
