Lou Brock bio
Lou Brock, born in 1939, American baseball player, who led the National League (NL) in stolen bases in all but one season from 1966 to 1974. Brock set an NL record for the most stolen bases in a single season with 118 and a major league record for career stolen bases with 938. Brocks single season record lasted eight years until it was broken in 1982 by Rickey Henderson with 130. Henderson also broke Brocks career steals record in 1991. A six-time NL All-Star, Brock batted .300 or more for seven seasons and helped the St. Louis Cardinals reach three World Series in five years.
Louis Clark Brock was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, and signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1960. He batted .361 in his only year in the minor leagues, and the Cubs called him up to the majors in 1961. After two mediocre hitting seasons he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964, where he joined the starting lineup as an outfielder. Two years later he led the league in stolen bases for the first of eight seasons. In 1967 he was a major contributor to the teams World Series win, batting .414.
Brock had another superb World Series performance in 1968, batting .464 with seven stolen bases, but the Detroit Tigers beat the Cardinals in seven games. His best year as a base stealer came in 1974 when he set a major league record with 118 stolen bases (broken in 1982 by Rickey Henderson with 130 stolen bases). In 1977 Brock broke Ty Cobbs lifetime stolen base mark, which stood at 892. In 1979, his final year in baseball, he stole 21 bases, finishing with a major league career record of 938.
Brock retired with a .293 batting average and 900 runs batted in (RBIs). He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
