Description:
A rare Longshan/Liangzhu Culture Jade Cicada/Penis, ca.2800-2000B.C. The LongShang Culture generally refers to 3 synchronous phases known by their gographical locations: Shangdong, Henan-Hebei, and Shaanxi-Longxhan. Agriculture became a primary activity as hunting and gathering became a secondary food source. They were a patriarchal social structure was established and had evidence of the practice of monogamy. The Longshan culture also were nature worshippers, with animal bones being used for divination. This Longshan jade cicada/penis shows a level of sophistication and humour in the clever adaptation of 2 forms in one. When viewed in one manner, the carving is of a cicada in pupa form. When viewed in the other way, it is a bold phalic symbol. An amazing feat is how the piece was carved and drilled without the use of metals. The holes were chipped and bored using various tools and powdered abrasives. This process must have been painstaking tedious. The jade is overall a very opaque, deep black with amber and whitish inclusions. The condition of this carving is in excellent condition and without any injury or repair. b5a/7
