Listed NY Woman Artist Expressionist Oil Painting 1950s
Description: Oil on parchment paper(?) canvas, framed. Signed verso: "Maggie Lewis". Letter written by artist describing the painting including location and date provenance attached to frame verso: "Dear Dr. Kulka, Thank you so much for your nice note and its enclosure, which arrived this morning. Your painting is the first in a series of three dealing with horse-meat market - there are two larger ones - French and Italian, all based on a water-color sketch made in Paris in 1954. I began yours in 1955 and finished it early in 1957. Perhaps a naive American I was a bit struck at the circus-wagon barbasity - and at the same time, shocking gaiety of these 'baucherie chevaliere'. Somehow, I've never been quite so emotional about cows. I do hope you and Charlotte will enjoy living with it - for I am so pleased to have it owned by you both. I'll be looking forward to seeing it in your lovely house soon. All good wishes - Marguerite Lewis". Dimensions: Canvas: 24 x 14in. Frame: 25 1/2 x 15 1/2in. Weight: 3lbs. 8oz. (Box S) Condition: Surface of the work is slightly dirty. Light soiling to surface paint and varnish throughout. Minor wear to surface varnish throughout, particularly along canvas edges.
