The edges on this fantastic set have alternating flowing flower designs in colors of blue, yellow, & red laying upon a golden circle design. Bordering the flowers are two more designs in red and yellow.
Although the same colors are incorporated into each design they are remarkably different yet harmonious.
Each bowl is trimmed with gold and the platter has amazing thick gold "handles" with sensuous lines.
The middle section of each piece is a pristine white ground.
This set is in Excellent condition.
The serving tray is a masterpiece measuring 16 1/2" long, 11 1/4" wide, and 2 1/4" deep. The 10 bowls measure 7 1/2" across & 1 3/4" deep. All pieces in the set carry 3 Jean Pouyat, Limoges France marks and the Wanamaker's back stamp. It is rare to find 3 JP/L back stamps, ca. 1862-1890.
This pattern is very rare and was made exclusively for the famous Wanamaker's store in New York. Easily adapted to serve ice cream & dessert, sandwich's & soup, or to use for an elegant table service for any type meal.
Wanamaker's department store was the first department store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, (opened in 1876) and one of the first department stores in the United States. It was renowned for its honest reputation and for innovating many retailing firsts in America. Wanamaker's opened there New York Store in 1896 and eventually became Macy's.
