Description: This colorful gourd with finial is a lime container from the Iatmul People, Sepik Region of Papua New Guinea. Men use gourd lime containers to hold the powdered lime chewed with betel nut. Details: the staff is hollowed out and the bottom end detaches. Condition: no repairs or restoration, minor loss of paint, small crack in the top design, as visible in photo, beautiful age patina. Height: 38 inches. Width: 4 inches. Depth of hole at the bottom extending up into the staff: 16 inches. References: according to “OCEANIC ART” by A. Mayer this is a lime container with finial from the Iatmul People, Middle Sepkik, Papua New Guinea (p. 231, object # 246).
