Description:
This is the first American edition of Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi. It was printed in 1883 and has over 300 illustrations. The title page states that this book was sold by subscription only. Published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston. In this edition there is an illustration on page 443 of the St. Louis Hotel; and on page 441 there is no illustration. The spine is loose on the inside front cover. There is light foxing throughout and fading. The original cloth binding is bumped on all corners and the top and bottom of the spine is torn. The pages, though, are readable and the binding is tight throughout the interior of the book. Between pages 148 and 149 a former owner inserted a newspaper clipping of a photo of the Mississippi, cut out of The New York Times Magazine from November 10, 1929. The clipping has adhered to the insidepage and both pages show a darker imprint from it. The book measures 9” x 6” x 2”.
