Description: Title: Dept. Du Lot Map Maker: Levasseur Date: c.1847 Size: 15” x 22” (H x W) Region: Europe: France, Midi-Pyrénées Levasseur’s maps are distinctive for their wide decorative margins containing elaborate depictions of the scenery, peoples, and trade goods of the areas he mapped. Levasseur maps are also known to offer a wealth of statistical data. Since present times, very few Levasseur maps were even moved out of France where they were mostly used in public libraries and town halls. This intricately detailed and beautifully rendered map, “Dept. Du Lot”, by Levasseur depicts the department of Lot, located in the south central France. The department of Lot is located in the region of Midi-Pyrenees, which includes the cities: Calhora, Figeace, and Gourdon. There is beautiful outline coloring coupled with the exacting cartography that Levasseur is known for. His work represents some of the last great decorative atlases of the 19th century. This is an extraordinary map and is an exceptional value because of the map’s substantial amount of illustration and information in each legend pertaining to the individual location. This map would make a very valuable addition to anyone’s collection. His work represents some of the last great decorative atlases of the 19th century. Victor Levasseur was an essential 19th century French engraver, cartographer, and engineer engraver of held a number of important cartographically related political and educations posts in France. He is most famous for his Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de La France, a large decorative atlas of France, including his Planisphere and five important continental maps.
