Description:
Signed in pencil lower right on the image. Leopold Hugo (1866-1933) was a master California pictorialist. After he established a studio in Santa Cruz in 1917, he became renowned for images of eucalyptus and cypress trees on the Monterey coastline. This photograph has the feel of an etching or charcoal drawing, a visual style popular amongst Pictorialists. Several photographs by Hugo are included in the survey “Pictorialism in California: Photographs 1900-1940“ published by the J. Paul Getty Museum, 1994. Keywords: landscape
